2022-2023 Week 0: Sept 6-9
Welcome back to school!
We've hit the ground running, folks; here's what we've done this week.
Tuesday:
- Where do we line up?
- Where is our class?
- Who are our teachers? (Library, music, little buddies, student support, counsellor, CYFSW...)
- What are the expectations in our class?
Wednesday:
- We wrote about ourselves
- We did notes about place value and position in math - quiz Sept 20th
- We looked at the present tense of ĂȘtre (to be), avoir (to have), and aller (to go) - pre-quiz Sept 16, quiz Sept 23
- We started listening to the book Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
- We talked about learning differently and how that makes us feel
- We made inferences (educated guesses based on what we've read, plus what we know from life)
- We learned that Janelle has ADHD, and so do a number of her students (who shall remain unnamed unless they choose to share that information themselves) - we watched a video called How To (Explain) ADHD
- We learned that we are welcome to share our own information, but not that of our friends or classmates
- We learned that we can borrow any of the reading books on the shelves in the classroom, and even take them home, as long as we put them back responsibly
- We learned that Janelle will mommy us (call us Sweetheart, Lovie, Darling, etc.) just like she does with her own kids (13 and 15 years old), but that she also expects us to take some responsibility for, well, ourselves
- We went outside for gym and played at the playground
- We will have Mme Theresa with us sometimes (YAY!!) but we don't know when, yet
- We learned that we're geniuses, but not at everything, and not all at the same thing
Thursday
- We practiced reading numbers in French
- We started brainstorming a paragraph in French
- We learned that Janelle isn't too worried about spelling or grammar at the beginning stages of writing, that is a revision step concern
- Some of us learned to play verb tic-tac-toe
- We learned and took notes about Janelle's expectations for solving math word problems... we'll go over it again, it's a bit overwhelming at first
- We (re)learned to play Multiplication Squares
- We got spelling list number one - test Thursday, September 14
- We were a little bit too chatty in music with Aleks, and didn't get to do the activities they had planned for us... we'll have different spots on Tuesday and will do better to be respectful with our voices
Friday
- We practiced reading numbers in French (6 digits this time!!)
- We organized our ideas for our paragraph in French
- We did our first Kicking Math (1 minute to do 50 multiplication questions: this week was the 1x tables. As we are able to complete the sheet at 100% in one minute, we move up to the next level)
- We practiced our verbs
- We played 3 on 3 basketball in gym with completely random and unbalanced teams - it was so fun, and kind of funny, too
- We went to the library with Mme Sullivan
- We started an art project today, we can work on it during class time when we don't have other work to do, or we can work on it at home, as long as it's done by Friday
Next week:
- Due Monday
- Choose a book in English to read
- Choose a book in French to read
- Due Tuesday
- Due Wednesday
- Due Thursday
- Spelling Test #1
- Due Friday
- Good copy of our French paragraph
- French verb pre-quiz
- Art project - Chandail
- Terry Fox walk on Friday
Please remember to send "inside shoes" for your child to use in gym. Bare or sock feet are not allowed for safety reasons. Flipflops, rubber boots, slides, and other cute shoes generally inhibit a child's ability to participate fully in our gym periods.
We write in our agendas EVERY DAY. Although I don't ask parents to sign them, I do check that they have been written in. Feel free to ask to see MY agenda if you think your child is "forgetting" to include all the pertinent information.
It has been a great (chatty) week, and I can't wait to do it again on Monday!! Have a great weekend, everyone!!
đ Janelle
