Bits and Pieces

This is the email that was sent home this morning:

Hello families,

A few things to note:

1. Your child is working with the recorder in music. Please send your child's recorder with them to school for music on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Mme Lorenz reports that most students in grade 5 (and many in grade 6) purchased them last year or the year before. If you require a recorder, Mme Lorenz has some quality new instruments for sale for $12. There are a LIMITED number of school recorders available when instruments are forgotten (Mme Lorenz cleans them after every use), but... flu season, anyone?

2. We are going to the musical Mama Mia on Thursday next week, and I'm still missing many permission forms. Tickets and bussing comes to $8/student.

3. Students have had a selection of 13 novels to choose from for our lit circle unit. They were welcome to bring 1-3 of these home over the winter break, but were not expected to have any read by January. I expected a book to be read to completion by Friday the 17th of January, then TWO MORE books by Valentine's day (averaging a book every 2 weeks.) Students should have a FOURTH book read by month's end. Currently 10 students have read 3 or more books. ALL students know how many books they have completed. Please check with your child about how many books they've read to this point.

4. Report cards went home two weeks ago, and only half of the report card envelopes have been returned signed. Please sign and return your envelope so that it can be reused in June.

5. Tomorrow we will be building a whale at school.

6. If you wish to order books from Scholastic this month, I will be placing the order this weekend. I expect the books to arrive before spring break.

7. There is no school for students on Monday or Tuesday next week; teachers get to learn instead! Professional Development will be happening district wide on Monday and by school on Tuesday.

8. WEDNESDAY IS PINK SHIRT DAY FOR ANTI-BULLYING.

9. Mme Pauline, our Aboriginal Education Assistant, has been doing some neat projects with us on Friday afternoons. Students are encouraged to bring hammers, 1-1/2" finishing nails, and some dried beans or grains to make rain sticks, or to bring small empty jars with lids to make glitter shakers.

I think that's about it for today.

Thanks,

Janelle
